A solo exhibition of travel sketchbooks and finalised drawings made during family trips
around Europe
Richard Higgs’ travel sketchbooks and larger charcoal drawings are being shown publicly for
the first time at
D-UNIT in March. At first glance, his works offer a private glimpse into the
family downtime spent away from his demanding career. Yet, since the late 80s, these
journeys have informed his professional life, with the sketchbooks becoming the visual basis for the ground-breaking travel series Rough Guides produced by Janet Street-Porter for
BBC2. Therefore, this exhibition is one of reflection on that colourful and busy life around the plaza and painterly contemplation of the fresh dishes served in terracotta platters. However,
it is also a record of Richard’s internal storyboard, at work, gathering and ruminating for
purposes beyond the pages shown in this exhibition.
Despite being asked to leave school at 16, Richard went on to study graphic design at Ravensbourne College of Art and after gaining a distinction spent 5 years working as a
designer in London. He returned to college to study fine art (painting) at Norwich School of Art. During his second year he started to work freelance for BBC East as both a scenic and
graphic designer. In 1983, he worked on one of the first computers used in British television
at the BBC and was given access to it in downtime to experiment with his own electronicpaintings.
After completing his degree, he worked in TV design for 30 years, collecting an international Emmy for the BBC/DK natural history series Eyewitness and two Panda Awards for the CBBC series Small Talk Diaries. Richard is probably best known for designing the
logos and title sequences for Nick Park’s Wrong Trousers, A Close Shave and Cracking
Contraptions. Other projects included Rough Guides (BBC), The Travel Show (BBC), Open
Air (BBC daytime), The Top Ten of Everything (CITV), The History of Plasticine (ITV), DIY SOS and Casualty (BBC), Garden Club (C4), Blue Peter (CBBC), Meerkat Manor (BBC) and
Wild Russia (Nat Geo and Animal Planet).
